History of the Asian American Civil Rights Movement

During the Asian American civil rights movement of the 1960s and 70s, activists fought for the development of ethnic studies programs in universities, an end to the Vietnam War, and reparations for Japanese Americans forced into  internment camps during World War II. The movement had come to a close by the late 1980s. The Birth of Yellow Power By watching African Americans expose institutional racism and government hypocrisy, Asian Americans began to identify how they, too, had faced discrimination in the United States. â€Å"The ‘black power’ movement caused many Asian Americans to question themselves,† wrote Amy Uyematsu in â€Å"The Emergence of Yellow Power,† a 1969 essay. â€Å"‘Yellow power is just now at the stage of an articulated mood rather than a program—disillusionment and alienation from white America and independence, race pride and self-respect.† Black activism played a fundamental role in the launch of the Asian American civil rights movement, but Asians and Asian Americans influenced black radicals as well. Black activists often cited the writings of China’s communist leader  Mao Zedong. Also, a founding member of the Black Panther Party—Richard Aoki—was Japanese American. A military veteran who spent his early years in an internment camp, Aoki donated weapons to the Black Panthers and trained them in their use. Impact of Internment Like Aoki, a number of Asian American civil rights activists were Japanese American internees or the children of internees. The decision of President Franklin Roosevelt to force more than 110,000 Japanese Americans into concentration camps during World War II had a detrimental impact on the community. Forced into camps based on fears that they still maintained ties to the Japanese government, Japanese Americans attempted to prove that they were authentically American by assimilating, yet  they continued to face discrimination. Speaking out about the racial bias they faced felt risky for some Japanese Americans, given their past treatment by the U.S. government. Laura Pulido, wrote in Black, Brown, Yellow and Left: Radical Activism in Los Angeles: â€Å"Unlike other groups, Japanese Americans were expected to be quiet and behave and thus did not have sanctioned outlets to express the anger and indignation that accompanied their racially subordinated status.† Goals When not only blacks but also Latinos and Asian Americans from various ethnic groups began to share their experiences of oppression, indignation replaced fear about the ramifications of speaking out. Asian Americans on college campuses demanded a curriculum representative of their histories. Activists also sought to prevent gentrification from destroying Asian American neighborhoods. Explained activist Gordon Lee in a 2003  Hyphen  magazine piece called â€Å"The Forgotten Revolution,† â€Å"The more we examined our collective histories, the more we began to find a rich and complex past. And we became outraged at the depths of the economic, racial and gender exploitation that had forced our families into roles as subservient cooks, servants or coolies, garment workers and prostitutes, and which also improperly labeled us as the ‘model minority’ comprised of ‘successful’ businessmen, merchants or professionals.†Ã‚   Students Efforts College campuses provided fertile ground for the movement. Asian Americans at the University of California, Los Angeles launched groups such as the Asian American Political Alliance (AAPA) and Orientals Concerned. A group of Japanese American UCLA students also formed the leftist publication Gidra in 1969. Meanwhile, on the East Coast, branches of AAPA formed at Yale and Columbia. In the Midwest, Asian student groups formed at the University of Illinois, Oberlin College, and the University of Michigan. Recalled Lee: â€Å"By 1970, there were more than 70 campus and†¦community groups with ‘Asian American’ in their name. The term symbolized the new social and political attitudes that were sweeping through communities of color in the United States. It was also a clear break with the name ‘Oriental.’† Outside of college campuses, organizations such as I Wor Kuen and Asian Americans for Action formed on the East Coast. One of the movement’s greatest triumphs was when Asian American students and other students of color participated in strikes in 1968 and 69 at San Francisco State University and the University of California, Berkeley for the development of ethnic studies programs. Students demanded to design the programs and select the faculty who would teach the courses. Today, San Francisco State offers more than 175 courses in its College of Ethnic Studies. At Berkeley, Professor Ronald Takaki helped develop the nation’s first Ph.D. program in comparative ethnic studies. Vietnam and Pan-Asian Identity A challenge of the Asian American civil rights movement from the outset was that Asian Americans identified by ethnic group rather than as a racial group. The Vietnam War changed that. During the war, Asian Americans—Vietnamese or otherwise—faced hostility. Lee said, â€Å"The injustices and racism exposed by the Vietnam War also helped cement a bond between different Asian groups living in America. In the eyes of the United States military, it didn’t matter if you were Vietnamese or Chinese, Cambodian or Laotian, you were a ‘gook,’ and therefore subhuman.† The Movement Ends After the Vietnam War, many radical Asian American groups dissolved. There was no unifying cause to rally around. For Japanese Americans, though, the experience of being interned had left festering wounds. Activists organized to have the federal government apologize for its actions during World War II. In 1976, President Gerald Ford signed Proclamation 4417, in which internment was declared a â€Å"national mistake.† A dozen years later, President Ronald Reagan signed the Civil Liberties Act of 1988, which distributed $20,000 in reparations to surviving internees or their heirs and included an apology from the federal government.

To Kill a Mockingbird The Scottsboro Boys Trail Free Essays

1. The Scottsboro Trials are about when 9 black young men were arrested for assault and later raping two white women on a train coming from Paint Rock, Alabama. Later the court found all nine guilty and they were sentenced to death. It affected America by showing how the court system was segregation in the 1930’s. 2. My feelings about the Scottsboro trials are all negative. I think this is unjust and unreasonable punishment for the nine black men. They didn’t do anything wrong and the court took the word of two white women which isn’t right. This whole trial was based on lies and racism. 3. The authorities in the Scottsboro trial were totally wrong. They based their accusations on segregation. If it was white men raping white women they would’ve been let off after learning that the women were lying. 4. The authorities obviously based the accusations on racism. Like I said if It were white men raping those women they would’ve let them go. 5. The decision to sentence all the men effected how America viewed black people. It made the ordeal of segregation a bigger situation than it already was. 6. At the end of the trial all were tried and sentenced to either death or life in prison. Later one was released by 1989 the last of the Scottsboro boys died. 7. Starting in the 1880’s the Jim Crow laws were enforced. They were what gave segregation its name. It prevented the races from doing anything together. . The Jim Crow Laws were enacted because of racial disagreement. All the Southern states wanted to limit the freedom of newly freed slaves. 9. The Jim Crow Laws had a selfish purpose. They were created to enforce segregation in schools, transportation, hotels and many more places in the south. 10. The Jim Crow Laws are so ridiculously unconstitutional. They limit colored peoples rights and give the whites everything. 11. The cause of The Great Depression was mostly caused by Black Tuesday also known as the day the stock market crashed. Other reasons consister od the banks failing, people couldn’t purchase across the border, the American economic policy with Europe, and the big drought which caused the dust bowl and made farmers fail. 12. Well the newly elected President Roosevelt did kind of pacts. Help give people jobs and improve the economy. That is what the government did to help the Great Depression heal. 13. Well the Great Depression made it twice as hard for southern blacks. Since they had just got out of slavery they were poor as it is. Most of them still trying to find jobs when the stock market crashed most white owned businesses wouldn’t hire blacks and most of the rest of the businesses weren’t hiring making it impossible to get a job and earn money for there familys. 14. Sharecropping was kind of a rip-off in my opinion. The newly freed slaves would take care of part of a white persons land for a share of the profit. 15. Overview and Analysis of Ethical Consumerism

Answer: Introduction This report is on the Rana Plaza garment factory collapse in Bangladesh on 24th April 2013 which killed around 1,138 people and left many children orphaned.This incident was the worst incident in the world which killed so many people. It was found later that Rana Plaza used to source clothes to 28 brands all over the world and few of the famous brands like Primark, Bonmarche, Matalan, Mango, and Benetton. The incident took place because of the poor workplace health and safety standards. These workers became the victims of human rights violations, suffering while others get rich to make fashionable clothes for rich consumers. As per the investigation it was found that the building was illegally extended to eight stories which is one of the reasons for the building to collapse. This incident could have been avoided if the company would have followed the ethical steps to improve the condition of the building and the safety of the employees. And if the officials would have taken correct measurement or action towards the illegal construction of the building the incident of Rana Plaza could have been avoided. Today most of the companies follow ethical way of production and follow all the rules and regulation mentioned by the government to avoid such incidents and to avoid huge fines from the government.(Department of Rural Economy, University of Alberta,2006) Today Ethical consumerism is encouraged and people are concerned about the products they buy, they make sure that the product is not harmful for the environment or society and Ethical consumerism even encourages them to think about how the product is produced and distributed and if it is doing any benefit to the society and environment(Creyer,1997). By following the ethical way of production the company can win the trust of its customers and increase their goodwill in the market. Consumers are looking for more ethical products and they want more information about the product that the y are purchasing, hence the company should make sure that they provide all the details on the product so that they win the trust of the customers and give a good completion to their competitors. The business to make sure that they follow all the ethical ways in the production of the goods or services to avoid any incidents or non ethical issues. This unethical behavior of the companies forces them to follow unethical procedures that results in damages or accidents like Rana Plaza. Few companies due to the rigorous competition tend to cost cutting and shortcuts on safety to make more profit or meet there clients requirements. There were many experiments done on ethical consumerism and it was found that if a company invests in even a small degree of ethical production, buyers will reward it just as much as a company that goes much further in its efforts. With the change in the consumers thinking and buying trend it is now important for the companies to follow the ethical way of working so that it can make profits for a longer time. It has gone through a rough phase of its carrier but still manages to work ethically and has won trust of the customers. There are many companies that try to hide the harmful effect of its product on an individual or on the society or environment and losses customers trust. Now a days customers have become more ethical in buying products, they have started thinking of the effects on the society or environment the product may have. And if they find that the product have an unethical effect on the environment then they prefer not to buy the product and they quickly shift to the next product. The survey revealed that people are ready to pay little more for products and services that use ethical way of production. And the consumers are even interested to know how the product that they are buying is produced and if it is produced in an ethical way (Leadingincontext, n.d.). The buying behavior of the consumers even depends on the personal factors, like customers loyalty and satisfaction are the two personal factors that affect the consumers behavior the most. Peopl e are more inclined towards branded products as it holds a symbol of status in the society and hence consumers are ready to pay more for these products. The survey in revealed that Advertisement and Communication can even change the consumers buying behavior. The survey shows that by advertising the product on television or through communication there is an emotional response created among the customers which results in changing the buying behavior (GOMES, 2013).It was even noticed during the survey that the purchasing power and revenue even plays an important role in changing the customers buying behavior. A purchasing power of the individual will have a impact on the buying behavior, for example if a person has less purchasing power or less money for disposal then the consumer will be ready to compromise on the goods and will not think about the ethical and non-ethical consumerism. The survey even shows that lifestyle even affects the consumers buying behavior, like a person who h as a good and balanced lifestyle will prefer organic food and will make sure that he buys products that is produced ethically and it does no harm to the environment or the society (Tallontire, Rentsendorj Blowfield, n.d.) The number of consumers are increasing every day who are willing to buy ethical goods which are produced ethically and does not violate any laws, the consumers are ready to pay more for these products to safe the future of the world. Consumers buying behavior even changes due to the availability of the product or the easy access of the product. Now a days people prefer buying products online where they can easily compare the products and can search for more options. People can today get connected to the world through mobile or internet. Smartphones have made online shopping more accessible and easier; today people are booking products directly from the company through smart phones, hence changing the shopping behavior of the consumers. (Webb, n.d.) Conclusion From the above researches done we can conclude that the Rana Plaza incident happened because of the non-ethical procedures followed by the company. The management forced the workers to work in a poor working condition and the workplace did not have any safety measurements. The workers were forced to work to complete the demand of the clothes in the foreign markets and the management ignored all the unethical productions of these products which lead to such a huge disaster which killed thousands of workers and left many children orphans (Chand, n.d.). The other survey on Co-operative Group revealed that it has gained the trust of the people for last 25 years by following the ethical way of working. The company holds a strong position among its competitors. The survey done shows that the company keeps transparency in its action and never ignores its responsibility. The adjective for friend is friendly: â€Å"characteristic of or befitting a friend or friends; that expresses or is indicative of friendship or a kind and helpful attitude.† Friendly is also used as a noun to mean â€Å"an ally.† In US colonial times, â€Å"a friendly† was an indigenous person who was on peaceful terms with the settlers. In modern military parlance, friendlies are troops on the side of one’s own forces or those of one’s allies. The abstract noun for the state of being a friend is friendship. The use of friend as a verb to describe the adding of a person to a list of social media contacts (dating from 2004) is still regarded as a barbarism by many English speakers, but friend was used as a verb as early as the 13th century. For several centuries, the verb befriend was in more common use, but the modern use of friend and unfriend as verbs is idiomatic. The use of friend in the context of social media does not negate the usefulness of befriend to refer to a genuine personal contact in which one person helps another. Plurilingualism, therefore can also be defined as the wide range of attempts to stabilize multilingual societies by fostering high levels of individual plurilingual competence. This approach places focus on Language teaching and learning, This also encompasses all categories of linguistic rights, legislation, policies, that affect the relationships between different communities. In this context, the Council of Europe, which closely monitors the linguistic and cultural environment in the continent, is now focusing on the language teaching and learning process. It has decided to encourage the concept of plurilingualism such that people of European union are able to freely mingle with each other. This basically is not only the need to converse in more than one language but the need to understand and appreciate cultures or ideas different from one's own. It now becomes a much broader concept dealing with the understanding of different cultures and languages. The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages: Learning, Teaching, Assessment, drawn up by Language Policy Division of the Council of Europe is a document that sets out to popularize plurilingualism. (Council of Europe, 1996) The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages: Learning, Teaching, Assessment, or CEFR, was put together by the Council of Europe as the main part of the project "Language Learning for European Citizenship" between 1989 and 1996. It is aimed to provide a method of assessing and teaching which applies to all languages in Europe. Thus because of plurilingualism, an individual person's experience of language in its cultural contexts expands and he builds up a communicative skill to which all knowledge and experience of language contributes. Thus a person can easily achieve effective communication with different people understanding different languages. This language policy fosters the capacity to coexist. The pluricultural education enables th e citizens to accept differences between different cultures, establish constructive relations with others, solve conflicts by nonviolent means, take on responsibilities, participate in decision-making and use mechanisms to protect people's rights. Since language is the most important social and cultural mark of identity, the education for plurilingualism and pluriculturalism promotes tolerance of other's viewpoint and remove the obstacles that hinder people's active participation in an increasingly globalized world. Advice How to Learn English Verbs - Assignment Example Based on self-assessment my own observations, this aim was particularly successful.   Students also demonstrated gradual and appreciable improvement in their understanding of and the proper use of various noun types.   They particularly enjoyed working together in groups for identifying and agreeing on noun types and learned from each other.   There were some setbacks with sentence structures as some students tended to have more difficulties with sentence structures than others did.   Identification of abstract nouns was also more difficult for some students than others.   Aside from these two areas, the group as a whole demonstrated marked progress throughout the session. Some students tend to have difficulties with sentence structures and double consonants more so than other students.     Ã‚  Similarly, identifying abstract nouns tend to be problematic for some students.   In other to improve these aspects of the session next time, I will ensure that those students encountering these particular problems identify these areas as a part of their personal goals.   By individualizing these problems, the students struggling with abstract nouns, double consonants and/or sentence structures can practice those areas independently while other students can move on.   Improving these areas independently can be dealt with either in class while other groups engage in other activities that do not require constant supervision or as a part of the homework assignment.   The observer/assessor provided positive feedback as contained in the application form.   However, she also noted that I missed an opportunity to capitalize on extending the spelling segment in that I could develop other areas of skills for life such as more dialogue in terms of use of standard English in different contexts.   Looking back, I can see where this approach would have been entirely appropriate during the class discussion on American and English spelling.   In my opinion, any opportunity to develop language should be embraced since some students in the class are bilingual.   I will, therefore, incorporate this approach.
